Cockroaches

The main species of cockroach found in UK properties are the German Cockroach, the Oriental Cockroach, the American Cockroach, and the Brown Banded Cockroach.  The most common of these are the German and the Oriental.

Cockroaches are perfect vectors for carrying disease and the main reasons for this are:

Cockroaches do not have a seasonal incidence, therefore their ability to transmit disease to humans remains undiminished throughout the year.

Their preference for a warm, humid and temperature controlled environment enhances their contact with pathogenic micro-organisms.

Being an indoor pest, cockroaches seldom venture outside and as such, share a close association with humans.

The pest species involved are largely nocturnal and their presence often goes unnoticed.

In temperate climates cockroaches tend to crawl rather than fly.  Therefore their contact time with contaminated material is increased.
